FOBES Organization Info
-
Friends of Broadway Elementary School (FOBES) is a parent-run, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to supporting Broadway Elementary. The funds raised through FOBES supplement the school’s budget by providing essential resources and enrichments for all students.
Broadway’s Mandarin and Spanish dual-language immersion programs attract a culturally and socioeconomically diverse community from across Los Angeles. As a District program of choice (not a magnet or charter), Broadway does not receive extra funding for the unique team-teaching model required for immersion. Each year, FOBES’ most important goal is to help provide the staffing support and resources that allow our students to thrive in two languages.
In addition to staffing support, FOBES funds programs and opportunities that enrich the school experience, including STAR PE, Spirit Series, field trips, and other enhancements that create a well-rounded education for every student at Broadway.

FOBES Frequently Asked Questions
-
FOBES (Friends of Broadway Elementary School) is our parent-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit booster club. Its mission is to raise funds that support Broadway’s Mandarin and Spanish dual-language programs, enrichment activities, and school-wide needs.
-
FOBES focuses on fundraising — family giving, corporate sponsorships, spirit wear, grants, and events — and manages all school-related finances. BSC, on the other hand, organizes community-building and volunteer-driven activities like cultural events, safety, and beautification.
-
Broadway does not have a PTA, which is a national membership organization with dues, bylaws, and state/national oversight. Instead, Broadway families created FOBES and the BSC to meet our school’s needs.
FOBES is an independent nonprofit booster club that manages all fundraising and finances.
BSC is made up of volunteer-led school committees that focus on community, culture, and hands-on support.
Together, FOBES and BSC provide the fundraising strength and volunteer power that a traditional PTA might cover, but in a way that’s flexible and tailored to Broadway’s dual-language programs.
-
FOBES raises money for programs and resources beyond what the school district provides. This includes classroom technology, field trips, cultural programs, enrichment teachers, and other resources that directly benefit our students.
-
FOBES does not make school policies, hire teachers, set curriculum, or run day-to-day school operations. It also does not lead committees like beautification or JEDI — those are part of BSC.
-
FOBES works closely with the principal and school administration to prioritize how raised funds are spent. Parents can also have a voice by attending meetings and sharing input.
-
FOBES is led by a board of parent volunteers who oversee fundraising efforts, manage finances, and coordinate with the school. Teams include Communications, Family Giving, Fundraising, and Finance.
-
You can join a FOBES team, volunteer at fundraising events, or contribute through family giving and corporate matching. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference.
